How Do I Choose My Friction Hinge?

When choosing your friction hinge you will need two things. The mounting type and style.
Our friction hinge numbering system uses the format: FH-[Style#]-[MountCode]

  • 1.
  • Choose which mounting type from the list of types below.
  • 2.
  • Choose which size/style of hinge you want from the list of hinges below.
  • 3.
  • Use the style number and mounting type to create your part number.

For example: If you wanted a flush mount 1681-style hinge, the part number would be FH-1681-FM

Friction Hinge Mounting Types

This section lists the four available mounting types for each style friction hinge. Once you've decided on which mounting type you want click on the style below to see the details for each variation of that style.

TM: Top Mount Max Angle: 180°

Advantages:

  • No tooling required
  • Opens a full 180°

Disadvantages:

  • Hinge and knuckles protrude above panel

FM: Flush Mount Max Angle: 100°

Advantages:

  • Face of hinge and knuckles are flush with the surface of panel
  • Greatly refined and customized look

Disadvantages:

  • Significant panel tooling required
  • Limited opening angle

SD: Swaged Down Max Angle: 130°

Advantages:

  • Opens farther than flush mount
  • Minimal protrusion above panel
  • Good balance between top and flush mount

Disadvantages:

  • Minor panel tooling required for knuckles
  • Some protrusion above panel

SU: Swaged Up Max Angle: 180°

Advantages:

  • Opens a full 180°
  • Minimal protrusion above panel
  • Good balance between top and flush mount

Disadvantages:

  • Minor panel tooling required for knuckles
  • Some protrusion above panel
